Kenya is a beautiful East African country with a rich history and culture. From its diverse wildlife to its
long-standing political history, there is much to learn about the nation of Kenya. In this blog post, we’ll
explore the origin of the nation, some of its most famous presidents, and what it is known for today.
Kenya first came into existence in 1963 after over 50 years of British colonial rule. Prior to British
colonization, the region was home to various ethnic groups including Kikuyu, Kalenjin, Luo, Kamba, Kisii,
Mijikenda and others. After gaining independence from Britain in 1963, Jomo Kenyatta became Kenya’s
first president and established a coalition government between his own party and several other
opposition parties. This coalition government would last until 1978 when President Kenyatta passed
away and Daniel Arap Moi succeeded him as president.
Under Moi’s presidency, Kenya experienced an economic downturn due to his poor management
policies. The situation improved in 2002 when Mwai Kibaki was elected as President and implemented
numerous reforms that helped stabilize the economy. In 2013 Uhuru Kenyatta was elected President
following a controversial election marred by fraud allegations that were ultimately dismissed by the
Kenyan Supreme Court. He served two terms as President before stepping down in 2021 when Deputy
President William Ruto took office as the Fifth president of Kenya.
Today Kenya is best known for its safari parks which are home to some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife
species such as elephants, lions and rhinos. Additionally, it is well known for its vibrant music scene
which has produced some world-renowned musicians such as Just A Band and Eric Wainaina over the
years. Lastly, it remains an important economic hub in Eastern Africa thanks to its strong manufacturing
industry and strategic location at the crossroads of East Africa’s major trading routes.
