Morocco was founded in 788 when Idris I united several Berber tribes in the region and declared himself
the first king of Morocco. This marked the beginning of what would eventually become one of the oldest

Almoravid (1062-1147), Almohad (1130-1269), Marinid (1215-1465), Saadi (1549-1659), Alaouite (1666-

The flag of Morocco has evolved since its establishment during Idris I’s reign. The present design consists
of two red horizontal stripes with a green pentagram at its center; it was adopted as the national flag in
1915 by Moulay Youssef, who served as both King and Prime Minister from 1912 to 1927. The country’s
current leader is King Mohammed VI, who ascended to the throne in 1999 after his father Hassan II
passed away. He is supported by Abdelilah Benkirane, who has served as Prime Minster since 2011.
