Seychelles

Located off the east coast of Africa, Seychelles is a small island nation that’s known for its stunning
coastline and natural beauty. But what many people don’t know is that Seychelles has a rich history,
going all the way back to the 16th century.
Seychelles was first discovered by Portuguese explorers in 1502. The islands were later colonized by
France in 1756 and became an important trading port for East India Company ships. The British then
took control of Seychelles in 1814 and continued to rule until 1976 when it gained independence. Since
then, it has become one of the most prosperous countries in Africa and is now considered as one of the
world’s top tourist destinations.
The national flag of Seychelles consists of five horizontal bands – blue on top, yellow in the middle and
red at the bottom with a green triangle on the hoist side which contains four white stars representing
each main island group (Mahé, Praslin, La Digue). The current president is Danny Faure who was elected
in October 2016 following his predecessor James Michel who served as president since 2004.
Today, Seychelles is most famous for its stunning beaches and lush rainforests. It also boasts incredible
biodiversity with over 500 species of fish, 200 species of coral and more than 200 species of birds –
making it one of the best places in Africa for bird watching. Tourism is booming here due to its stunning
landscape and crystal clear waters which attract tourists from all around the world every year.
