Zambia

Zambia is a country located in the southern part of Africa. It is a landlocked nation with a population of
over 17 million people. This African nation has an incredibly rich history, from its early settlers to its
modern-day government and culture.
The first known settlers in Zambia were hunter-gatherers who lived in the region for thousands of years
before Europeans arrived. The area was later colonized by Britain in 1889 and named Northern
Rhodesia. From 1953 to 1963, it was administered as part of the Central African Federation with
Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and Nyasaland (now Malawi). It became independent in 1964 as
the Republic of Zambia, under President Kenneth Kaunda.
President Kaunda’s rule was marked by political stability and economic growth, but his policies also led
to restrictions on civil liberties and human rights abuses. In 1991, democracy was restored when
Frederick Chiluba won the elections, becoming Zambia’s second president since independence. Under
his leadership, economic reforms were implemented which led to increased foreign investment and
improved living standards for many citizens. His successor Levy Mwanawasa continued these reforms
and initiated programs to improve education and health care services across the country. He also
reduced poverty levels significantly during his tenure.
Today, Zambia is known for its stunning natural beauty—its national parks are home to some incredible
wildlife—and its vibrant culture which includes traditional music, dance, artisanship, cuisine, textiles and
festivals like Kuomboka that celebrate traditional ceremonies or events related to kingship or
chieftainship. The country’s flag is composed of three stripes: red at the top symbolizing the struggle for
freedom; black in the middle representing the people; and orange at the bottom symbolizing mineral
wealth. The current president of Zambia is Edgar Lungu who has been in office since 2015.
