Gabon
Located on the western coast of Central Africa, Gabon is a small country with a rich history and culture.
In this blog post, we will explore some of the key aspects of Gabon’s history, from its past presidents
and flag to what it is known for today.
Gabon was first colonized by France in 1839. After World War II, the country gained independence in
1960 under President Leon Mba. Mba served as president until 1967 when he was overthrown in a coup
led by former Prime Minister Albert-Bernard Bongo. Bongo would go on to rule Gabon for more than
four decades until his death in 2009. Following his death, his son Ali Bongo Ondimba assumed the
presidency and still holds the office today.
The flag of Gabon was adopted on August 9th, 1960 after gaining independence from France. The flag
features three horizontal stripes which represent the Democratic Party of Gabon (green), Social
Evolution Movement of Gabon (yellow), and the National Union for Progress (blue). The yellow stripe
also symbolizes the equator which passes through Gabon, while the green stripe symbolizes hope and
forests that dominate much of the country’s landscape. In addition, there is a red five-pointed star
placed at the center which stands for unity and progress as well as African solidarity.
Today, Gabon is known for its lush rainforests and abundant wildlife including elephants, gorillas,
hippos, chimpanzees and other animals not found anywhere else in the world. The country also boasts
some fantastic national parks including Lopé National Park which attracts tourists from around the globe
looking to explore its pristine beauty. In addition to its natural beauty, Gabon has an emerging economy
with oil reserves that make it one of Africa’s leading oil producers.
