Senegal

Senegal is a west African nation located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered by Mauritania,
Mali, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. The country has a rich culture, with influences from both Africa and
Europe.
Senegal was inhabited by various ethnic groups for centuries before being colonized by France in the
late 19th century. The French influence can still be seen in the country’s architecture and customs today.
After gaining independence in 1960, Senegal quickly established itself as one of the most stable
democracies in West Africa.
Senegal has had a total of five presidents since gaining independence in 1960. These include Léopold
Sédar Senghor (1960-1980), Abdou Diouf (1980-2000), Abdoulaye Wade (2000-2012), Macky Sall (2012-
present) and Yaya Jammeh (2017). Each president has had their own distinct style of governance, but all
have worked to maintain peace and stability within the nation.
The flag of Senegal was adopted upon independence in 1960, and features three horizontal stripes –
green at the top and bottom, with yellow at the center – symbolizing hope for progress and unity
between different ethnic groups within the nation. Additionally, there is a green star at the center which
signifies unity between African nations worldwide.
Senegal is a vibrant West African nation with a deep cultural heritage that dates back centuries. Since
